British Science Week                 10th to the 19th March 2023

The theme this year is 'Connections'.

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths.

Why not try some of the home science experiments from the Royal Institution: www.rigb.org/families/experimental

or visit sciencelive.net to find out about science-related events locally.

St Michael's connected Puffinschools World Book Day events and British Science Week.

We enjoyed finding out about Dr Sheila Kananis new book 'Can You Get Rainbows in Space?'and trying some experiments. We also drew brilliant brains with illustrator and comedian Henry Paker and learnt all about Princess Olivia Investigates: The Wrong Weather! with author Lucy Hawking.

Keep your eyes open for the lastest issue of OpenUpScience from the Cambridge Science Centre.

This will be sent in addition to the weekly newsletter from school.

The magazine is published every month.

Here are some ' Big Questions ' from around the school.

What is the shape of space?

How big will space be?

How was the Sun formed and and how was space and the solar system formed?

Why is snow white?

What happens when sunlight, rain, hail and snow all come together?

How is gravity made?

Is there any possible way to get out of a black hole?

Where would the black hole be in space?

How long would a black hole last?

Are there white holes?

Is there life on other planets?

Star Trek actor William Shatner (Captain Kirk) flies to space on-board Blue Origin's "New Shepard" rocket on 13th October 2021. He became the oldest person who has flown to space at age 90.

"What you have given me is the most profound experience. I'm so filled with emotion about what just happened. I hope I never recover from this. I hope I can retain what I feel now. I don't want to lose it." - William Shatner

Flynn and Molly have been finding out about minibeasts and wanted to observe ladybirds more closely.

You have done lots of research to make your ladybird habitat. Lets us know how you get on with your observations.

Ed has shared his instructions in case any of his classmates in Yr 5 would like to have a go at this experiment with their families.

Be sure to ask an adult to supervise you.

Get one (wine) glass

Add 3cm height veg oil

Then carefully add 1.5cm height water

Approx 10 drops food colour

Finally one fuzzy tablet/effervescant i.e.Alka seltza or vit C

We shone a torch on it too!

- Ed

Thank you Ed that looks amazing!

F. has done quite a few science experiments. He has tried to rip a piece of A4 paper as small as an atom (31 times) he has make marshmallow and spaghetti molecules (CO2 and H2O and had done some amazing chromatography! He learnt about pigments and how different pigments travel at different speeds and how we used the filter paper to separate them out. We have also show how colour food colouring mixes with water quicker when it is warm, rather than cold - because the atoms in the water are moving around quicker. - F.'s Mum

Wow, you have found out so much!
